control

I’ve never really thought how significant one life moment can be but three years later, I feel its impact more than ever.

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic I was anchoring On the Story on HLN, and I was told we needed to shut down production for two weeks so our control rooms could spread out.

Now, I could have thrown a massive diva anchor fit. My show (my baby!) was being taken off the air. We didn’t know the extent of what would become a global shutdown and we were still living in our past lives (pre-pandemic) where this type of thing wasn’t even possible.

The next morning, I woke up and made the announcement to my viewers via social media that we made the decision for the safety of everyone and how lucky I am to wake up and see my babies in the morning (I am usually long gone before they wake up as a morning anchor).  I ended it with “we can’t control what happens to us, but we can control how we react to it.”

I began reporting from home, and I reacted to it by living out this new purpose of my work.

What followed was an amazing shift in my career, as I started my own business, Rylan Media, helping experts elevate their voices in the media. It turned out to be the best thing to ever happen to me.  The acceptance of what I cannot control and intention to work on what I can control allowed for everything to happen.

So this week, I want you to ask yourself, what you are going to RELEASE because you have no control over it? Then, what will you accept this week in order to give it less power over your time?  Set a reminder in your calendar 3 years from now to check back in on how much that transformed your life.

When you feel like giving up, don’t. Yes, if you set your mind to it, you can karate chop a piece of wood in half, too. (Don’t try this at home, though!)

Tip of the Week
Your story is the only thing that you have ZERO competition with. It’s time you use it more effectively.
